AUDREY, TWENTY-FOUR, SLAYER, OLIVIA WILDE The first thing you need to know to understand Audrey Evelyn Delaney is what her name means. They say you can tell a lot about a person by what their name means after all. Audrey is an English name meaning noble strength and Evelyn is German for ‘desired’. Delaney is of Irish origin derived from the word ‘dubh’ meaning dark or black along with the name of the river Slaine (Slaney). It also could be derived from the word ‘slan’ which means ‘defiance.’ Now by themselves these names mean very little but when put into context they mean a lot. Delaney is usually a rather common last name, especially in Ireland and the United States. But there is only one set of Delaneys that really matter, and those are the slayers. Delaneys have been hunting werewolves and vampires for generations, so much so that if you ask any relatively old vampire or werewolf what the name Delaney means to them they will most likely give you a dirty look and tell you to shut the hell up. The Delaney clan began hunting when their town when their family members started to go missing. A few Delaneys came back, but they weren’t the same, they were violent and vicious. Instead of try and help the abomination that his son had turned into his father experimented on him, realizing that a lack of blood made him weak but didn’t kill him. And finally that driving a stake through his heart was the only sure fire cure. But even then the Delaneys were unsure what to do until another generation passed, and this time a daughter started sneaking off once a month during a full moon. After some pressing she revealed she was bitten and has been turning into a wolf during a full moon. That’s when the Delaneys picked up their weapons and started to fight back against the things that went bump in the night. They were trained from birth to pick up a weapon and fight, without mercy and without fear. And if anyone were to come down with either affliction they were to be killed as a sign of mercy. Audrey Delaney was taught just the same. From birth her father preened her to become a hunter. Born and raised in Ireland for the first ten years of her life her father decided it was time to move to bigger hunting grounds, America. During their time there Audrey’s mother became disenchanted with her father’s constant pushing for his daughter and her two brothers. She watched her children’s childhood be taken away from them and was powerless to stop them It was all a mater of tradition and honor, family pride. So while she drank herself to death her father pushed, eventually taking them out on hunts at the age of sixteen. If they survived they were worthy enough to move on to eventually hunting by themselves. Despite the close-knit family, the Delaneys knew they couldn’t draw attention to themselves. They kept in contact but when hunting only hunted small numbers of vampires at a time, with only one or two Delaneys. At the age of twenty Audrey was finally allowed to hunt on her own. She had a cover job working as a bartender at a night club but on her days off she did her digging. On occasion a vampire or werewolf would walk into her place of business and Audrey would have to pour them a drink and pretend nothing was wrong. But as soon as she left she could hunt them down and put them out of their misery. Despite her confidence and opinionated behavior she never questioned her family’s tradition. It was a matter of pride. That is until one of her older brother’s was bitten by a werewolf and at that moment she wondered if what she was doing was wrong. That they had no control over what they had turned into. But as soon as that flicker of defiance sprung up in her it was distinguished as she saw her brother’s head cut cleanly off his body as he sobbed. Trying to put the image away she pushed forward in her work, traveling again this time to Alberta, Canada. She became a bartender for some extra money and hunted werewolves and vampires on her days off. But she seemed to be off her game, no longer could she pick out a vampire in a crowd or a werewolf from twenty feet away. The death of her brother shook her horribly. But she pushed and pushed, and began slipping up, having a few scars to prove it. One night she lost it completely, having lost all weapons a werewolf charged at her and she stood there without the urge to flee or fight. Dumbfounded at her lack of composure Audrey felt herself be tackled to the ground by the werewolf, it’s teeth threatening to rip out her throat. All she could think of was her sobbing brother, apologizing over and over to her father. And so she accepted it, accepted her death entirely. But the werewolf stopped an inch from biting into her flesh, turned and ran off. Ever since then she has been trying to be her calm, collected self. Audrey tries not to question her luck and just persevere, but in the back of her mind she is still wondering why. Two years later the Delaney name has spread through the United States and Canada. Thankfully very few know exactly what the members of the Delaney clan look like. Audrey has learned to use her looks and confident to draw vampires and werewolves in, but it’s getting harder to spot who is human and who isn’t. But Audrey is going to be damned if this gets to her, overall her stubborn and determined personality will persevere. After all the Delaneys are survivors. mikey is a lady killer?! of caution 2.0 |
