It was 9:03 when Vivian Cooper finally arrived at the sweet shop in the Shopping District. She had been running and there was a slight amount of sweat coating her forehead as she skidded to a stop inside the shop. As she looked over at her boss, whom was behind the front counter, she saw that he was giving her a death glare. "I'm sorry. I had to take my brother to school," Vivian said as she took off her coat and hung it up in the closet. "Plus, there was a lot of traffic."
"Okay," Mr. Levine said as he continued to punch digits into the calculator he was using. "Just don't let it happen again. I don't want to be forced to let you go due to something as silly as being late to work."
"Yes, sir," Vivian replied as she felt relief flood her body. She thought for sure that he would be angrier at her for being late. The last boss she had would have been. She had come very close to being fired before they moved to Lytle Creek. At least Mr. Levine is nicer than Mrs. Tucker had been. I really hated working for Mrs. Tucker. I hope that I won’t feel that way with Mr. Levine in the future, she thought as she concentrated on sorting through the things that needed to be shelved. Once she was finished sorting these things into groups, she began to put them where they went on the shelves.
A few hours passed and soon it was time for her lunch break. “Be back soon, Mr. Levine,” she said before she put on her coat, left the sweet shop, and headed over to McDonalds. As she walked, she looked at the people around her, wondering what they were thinking. Had something bad happened to them recently? What secrets were they hiding? Were they hurting inside like she was?
